[Dear_Trent_#_37: Insufficiently_Hyperbolic_Love]
Dear Scrumptious, Bearded, String Quartet Accompanied, Hoodie-Wearing, Bridge School Benefit Trent,

I'm sure this performance was nothing short of seminal on a musical level, but since I haven't heard it, I will have to restrict my comments to the following: Sweet Jesus Holy Motherfucking Christ, you are delicious. I want to have, like, 10,000 of your babies.
Love,
Dierdre
PS. Oh my God, your hands. Oh. My. God.

Ohhh, BD. You're just adding to the growing conspiracy keeping me from getting any work done.

Beautiful! We've got the fuzzy mountain man back.
The YouTube link is awesome for giving a glimpse into the performance that we couldn't be there for even if I want to scream at the cameraman to utilize his zoom feature. Hopefully Drakh adds some more clips. Just while watching the first four one more went up.
I’m convinced that Trent needs to ditch the attempt to make “Nonentity” into a big guitars sounding song and just leave it as an instrumental, although the sound quality for this rendition kind of sucked. Did they have the kids playing the strings or what? And during “The Fragile” he sounds like he’s trying just a *bit* too hard screaming the “I”s. Sorry if that sounds so bitchy right off the bat but in each clip I kept waiting for all the elements to catch up to one another. But still fabulous, fabulous, fabulous to hear something from the Empire of Dirt.

Emerald, work is overrated. Here's a video close-up of Trent's face singing Hurt. I dare you to try to get any work done now.:p

Just for the record so is housework.
That’s an awesome clip too but at the end...dude wtf? Did you really have to clap with the camera still attached to your hand? It’s a little disorienting.

Long live the beard!
I'm so happy to see it return :-D
Posted by: Nicole | Oct 22, 2006 7:59:23 PM
Yeah, that beard is sexy.
On the topic of that recording of "Hurt", though, I always wonder why Trent never changes shit up such that he just goes for soft, you know? His "whisper to a scream strategy must be patented at this point, and I must admit, it would be truly surprising if he would just bring it down a notch or two on the screaming.
Just my humble opinion (LOL).

Whatever, Jane.
There are a whole bunch of pictures where Trent looks incredibly dreamy on night 2 of the benefit here, especially this one, where I can see his hands, his beard, and -- SWOON!! -- his FUCKING HOTT TEETH.
OMFGIJUSTCAME.

And in that last one D, you get a glimpse of what he must look like carrying a handful of colored Easter eggs.
Posted by: Iris | Oct 22, 2006 10:15:39 PM
I would have made him dress up for that benefit.

That being said, Trent looks great, and the hair has greatly improved. I wish we could get a better version of that performance, though.
Posted by: maise | Oct 22, 2006 10:55:13 PM
Whatever, Maise. That hoodie is totally snuggly... just like that lovely, lovely beard. Ooh, I love it when Trent looks all snuggly, but still has those sharp teeth. Can anyone be sexier?
Posted by: Dierdre | Oct 23, 2006 1:10:14 AM
He's rocking a kind of "Jeremy Irons in The Mission" look there. I actually really like it, and I disliked the beard of a few years ago. I think it's about the hair.
Posted by: maise | Oct 23, 2006 6:45:00 AM
I hate beards. Every other beard in the world, with the exception of this one. Goddamn.
Posted by: JR | Oct 23, 2006 10:21:06 AM
Oh, glad also that the hair seems to have evened out and the muscles are at least more easily camouflaged.
You know, cause it adds so much to the music and everything.

I came here just to see if Dierdre had said anything about Trent's appearance for the Bridge School event... and she has!
Love his hair, love the beard (much more controlled-looking than the beard he had back in what, 2004 was it?), love the hoodie. Ok... really love the hair. That length is perfect.
Love this picture. (if that doesn't show up, try this)

God, screw that, I'm bad with years. The scraggly beard with the longer hair was even older than 2004, I think.

Maybe I'm getting crusty, but I'm not loving the string quartet in this performance. Maybe it's just the sound quality of the random YouTube video that we've got, but they just sound *off* somehow. But also, I just think they're superfluous. It would be very interesting to hear Trent backed up by an entire orchestra, but in the end, I'd take Trent alone at the piano with his retro boombox any day. Plus, if it were just him, he wouldn't have to get so shouty with the lyrics all the time.
Posted by: maise | Oct 23, 2006 12:15:36 PM
What if he had done "Suck", and then at the end he whispered to the crowd "I wanna do charitable things to you"? Would that have been as funny as I think it would have?
Posted by: JR | Oct 23, 2006 1:51:56 PM
did someone say trent reznor and entire orchestra?
where?
damn, false alarm.
string quartet; it's a start.
Posted by: guLin | Oct 23, 2006 2:14:47 PM
(((snort))) JR!!! I agree Maise, the strings were a bit wonky. But, could have just been the recording.
Posted by: Prism | Oct 23, 2006 2:26:05 PM
What I love is the way the beard is accompanied by a full neckbeard portion. I love how much he has not pruned it ONE BIT. That gives me hope. Oh man. Where is Baal when you need him?
Posted by: Dierdre | Oct 23, 2006 2:39:40 PM
on most of the recordings, the strings sound wonky. but i have this recording of non-entity that i am listening to right now and it doesn't sound wonky at all. depends on the rip...of course, an official recording would be great.
i have been waiting for something like this ever since "still". i can only hope that, somewhere in time and space, an entire orchestra and trent reznor can come together and make some music.
and yes, suck would have been funny. i also would like to see neil young's face if tr were to start playing closer. just a few bars. just for fun.
Posted by: guLin | Oct 23, 2006 2:41:03 PM
Well, I listened to a few minutes of it, noted that it sounded a bit pants, and then decided to wait until clean recordings are released, as it is reported that they will be, on iTunes. I don't want to hear it all jacked up and then make a judgement.
An orchestra? I'd be happy if he just had a boombox and a piano. He slays with simple tools. If he's going to write for an orchestra, I would prefer it wasn't just some overblown orchestral rehash of "Hurt" and whatnot. I mean, those are all beautiful songs, but I think the most beautiful thing about them is him, his expression, and his voice. My preference would be to strip them down to their brass tacks even further, not fancy 'em up with a roomful of extras.
That said, if he wrote specifically for an orchestra, I would totally listen to it. No doubt about that.

I just want him to not get all shouty JUST ONCE. What is it that makes him always gotta holler?
That's my question for the big giant head: can you do it, Trent? Can you just let "Non-Entity" be soulful, soft, and aching?
