[Call_&_Response_#_1]
Whoo hoo! I'm back in CHAINS, and I love the pain! Gabriel and I have resolved our differences, and while I remain in Europe for the time being, I'm back in black, here at Wearing These Chains. It feels good.
In fact, it feels so good that I'm instituting a new feature; but before I do, I need to confess that I fully lifted this idea from the internet headquaters of former Nail Robin Finck.
I'm going to tell all of you, right now, that I adore Robin, so don't even try to start with me on that. I feel like Robin and I are soulmates, since we both have rather gynecological filters on our names over at ETS, and as much as I do love Trent, I don't care how much his panties got into a twist over Robin and the whole Axel Rose debacle: Robin ruled. Not only was he a big fabulous Frankenstein whose ass looked hot in latex, but he always looked like he was feeling it up there, embracing his role as a side dish with total committment. I mean, OBVIOUSLY, he kicks the ASS of Aaron North. Finally, if you've ever visited his website, you can also see that he is a wonderful photographer and artist. So, my point is: don't even try to tell me that Robin isn't the nazz, within or without the Empire of Dirt.
But, oh yeah! The new feature! My dear readers, I want to hear your voices. Once a week, I am going to pose a question, and anxiously await your responses, which you can leave in the "comments" section below this post, or, if you're shy, you can e-mail to me at [email protected].
Think of it as a little research project! At the end of the week, I will summarize and coallate your responses, give my own, and pose a new one. I think it could be fun!
Here's the first:
Trent Reznor, clearly, is the object of immense fascination. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THAT GUY? Now, what I'm looking for here isn't "Uh... he's a genius! Duh!" or "He's frickin' HOT!" Obviously, I know that. Don't we all? What I'm asking is what the secret special ingredient is for you. What specific little detail or particularity presents the clearest picture of his genius and/or hotness to your imagination with that special vividness that puts him in a class by himself?
DO TELL!

I'd have to say it is the way Trent reaffirms my hatred of humanity by teasing out the absolute worst sort of slavering, panicky, dripping-at-the-thigh, bitch-assery from fans like you.

That's the spirit Matt. How do you think he manages it?
Posted by: Dierdre | Jul 12, 2005 6:15:24 AM
I love the way Trent often keeps his eyes open when he's singing... or screaming, whichever. I think he has x-ray vision.
Posted by: minion | Jul 12, 2005 7:03:17 AM
For me, it's his utter lack of bullshit and willingness to put it all out there. Raw, brutal honesty is where it's at.

What is it about dear, sweet Trent? Well, for one thing, he's not so dear and sweet, but you can just taste the dollop of honey on every ounce of anger, every gram of intensity -- which is the BEST thing about him, I must say. Intense people never bullshit, never take you for a ride, and always give you everything you ask for to the millionth degree. In the end, they're spent, you're spent, but it was all worth it, and you'd do him, er, it, all over again...

first, let me say that trent reznor (physically) is not my type. it's not as if i would throw rocks at the guy, he's just not my typical fuck.
that said, it's trent's voice and presence (live and on record) that comforts me and makes me feel like i'm part of something.
after the excruciating five-year wait for 'with teeth,' i was reduced to a crying puddle of weakness when i first heard 'the hand that feeds.' it was so reassuring and life-affirming. i, like so many others, owe the man my life.
love,
denise

Buttercup, I so feel you, girl. Especially the part about doing him/it over and over again. You, too Emerald. Trent rules!
Posted by: Dierdre | Jul 12, 2005 5:20:52 PM
i forgot something:
dierdre, it's axl rose, not axel. if you add that 'e,' his name is no longer an anagram for 'oral sex.'
okay, fine. i wanna fuck trent's brains out.
do you feel me now?
love,
denise

Needy loser.
Posted by: Matthew Misanthrop | Jul 12, 2005 7:14:10 PM
i'm needy?
what, did the bullies from ets chase you off? thought you might swing by here where you feel you have the upper hand?
wrong, my dear. you're bitching on a blog hosted by writers that would eat you alive.
i love you, matthew misanthrope, even though no one else does.
i'd tell you how much you mean to me via email, but [email protected] does not exist.
i love wimpy virgins, no doubt.
love,
denise
p.s. keep reading wtc!

Matt, quit heckling. You know you want Trent, too, you big virginal liar.
Denise, if I'd have read your post, I'd have felt you, too. Like you, Trent is not typically the sort of looking man that I would find attractive, especially now, with those muscles; but dude, let's face it: he was pretty freaking ridiculously beautiful back in TDS days, and even in the early days of The Fragile. I mean, I guess what I'm saying is twofold: first, he's certainly not a troll, and second, it doesn't matter what he looks like, because that's not the thing about him.
Here's a little detail that drives me wild: it's the way he FULLY PRONOUNCES words. The way he says "here" at the end of "I am still right here" or the way he fully pronounces the "-ing" every time he says "fucking". The way he speaks every syllable of the words he chooses makes them feel intentional and packed with the force of his will, just like everything else he ever does, and I love that about him.
ButtercupJ, what things does Trent do that most communicated his intensity to you? I know exactly what you're saying, but how does he get it across to you - I mean, other than the non-stop yowling - is there any small detail you could point to?
Em, you too... can you think of any small, particular thing that most convinces you of his honesty?
Denise, I love that you say you find Trent comforting! I do, too, and I always have. It isn't feeling part of something for me, though, it's simply that a creature like Trent lives and breathes - something that fucking good - that just makes me feel better. He gets mad about all the right things, and there's something about his voice that just feels like it's already in my head or something.
Wierd, that.
Anyway, I'm so lucky that I'm be seeing his majesty AGAIN tonight in London. YUMMERS!

PS. Thanks for the tip on Axl, Denise. I'm going to go ahead and wear it as a badge of honor that I didn't know about that Oral Sex thing, because EW.
Posted by: Dierdre | Jul 13, 2005 12:03:36 AM
Well jeeze, Dierdre, give me a hard question, why don't you?
Honestly? Every single thing you can think of to describe Trent Reznor is why I love the man so much. The biggest thing about him, though, is that he's an inspiration. He's gone through a LOT of personal struggles and has come out the better for it. I'm not that great at articulating myself, but yeah, I think you get what I'm saying. He was able to find the conviction within himself to claw his way out of his personal hell, and I admire him and revere him more than anyone I know for being able to do that. It gives me the hope that I'll be able to find that strength within myself, hopefully sometime soon, to do what he did, and get my own life back on track.
Second biggest thing about Trent is the way he sings. If you listen to him, you can just tell that he actually MEANS what he sings. He's not just writing lyrics and recording songs to please the public, he's doing it for himself... and I think if people appreciate that, and get enjoyment from his work, then that's a bonus for him. Like my mom (who is 6 years older than Mister Reznor) said, "I really love this guy's music. He's singing like he means it. He's singing with feeling." This was said while Hurt was playing on my NIN mix CD I'd made for our two hour long drive to the beach the other weekend.
And to be horribly cliche, it helps that he's probably the sexiest man on earth. Oh yes.
Posted by: Kim | Jul 13, 2005 12:45:34 AM
Kim, did you love Trent back in the days before he clawed his way out of his own private idaho? Did you love him back when he was a crazy, rampaging maniac with a freaked-out secret side that was hiding in the ladies room?
I agree that it's an inspiration that he's pulled himself together. I'm just wondering, though - because I always thought the part where he said "I'm going all the way down I'm leaving today" was pretty inspirational, too, in it's own way... he was so fearless, and he was so not going to take any shit.
That, and also, he's fucking HOT.
COME ON ALL YOU WHO HAVEN'T POSTED SOMETHING! TELL US WHY YOU LOVE TRENT!
Posted by: Dierdre | Jul 13, 2005 1:00:08 AM
Yes, I loved Trent back in those days too, no need to worry about that. I think I actually prefer that era Trent to the newer one... it's just that the new Trent is more inspiring in the "get your life back together" aspect.
And like you said, he was inspiring even back then, just in a different way than now.
Posted by: Kim | Jul 13, 2005 1:12:30 AM
Awesome, Kim. It all brings me to another thing I like about Trent that gets back to Em's point, I think: he is so honestly and completely an artist, and so committed in his actions that whatever he does, it's interesting, isn't it? I've said this to Gabriel before, and I'm not sure if he buys it, but I think Trent could no more betray that part of himself than he could turn into a pig and fly.
Also... HOTT.
Posted by: Dierdre | Jul 13, 2005 5:47:10 AM
If by "virgin" Denise, you mean I have not had sex with Trent (yet), then absolutely. I'm a virgin.
Dierdre, I never said I didn't want Trent. I'd like to fuck that man deeply with his own microphone, torture his sweaty balls, and then have him exact all Nine Inches of his revenge on my asshole.
Posted by: Virgin (MM) | Jul 13, 2005 7:04:47 AM
More like THREE INCHES OF REVENGE.
And, Matt? I wouldn't talk that way about Trent's microphone around here if I were you.

What I like about HRH is how the complete perfection of his recordings, the utter lack of even a single, stray, unintentional noise, makes it possible for me to turn my iPod to top volume and not hurt my ears even a little. It's an interesting analog for the possibilities of human behavior. It's an argument for the perfectability of human nature, although Trent might not agree.
Posted by: Matt Ambrose | Jul 13, 2005 9:36:12 AM
I think Trent is a lot like his eyes. At first they seem brown but at second glance they're green. It's like to a lot of people who don't really listen to his music he's just some dark angry rockstar but once you listen more and identify with his pain and his success you realize he's extremely bright and intelligent.
That and you can tell in his little smile that he is OH SO kinky in the bedroom and that is the definition hot.
Posted by: Tori | Jul 13, 2005 1:04:44 PM
I'm not sure I follow you with the 'perfectability of human nature' but I can totally hear the perfection of the recordings. It's really complex and every sound has a purpose, none of it seems random. I get such a deep sense of appreciation when I think of how every detail must have been meticulously thought out.
What Kim said about Trent making music to please himself and not others, it reminds me of something Tori Amos said, that the piano was like her ball and chain, without it she had no passion, and I think the same is true for Trent. He does it because he HAS to, it's in his nature, and that almost makes him a slave to it.
I'm also intrigued by the lack of girlfriends/wives/children that so many rock stars seem to accumulate. I know that's his private life and all, but I can't help but wonder about it.
Anyway, Trent is a fine specimen of a man and I would happily take all three inches of those nails.

My dears, I am just back from spending the evening with Trent, and I have a new thing I love about him: its when he leans over the crowd to sing "Piggy" and you happen to be RIGHT THERE, so you just reach up and put your hand inside his open shirt, and stoke his chest, and as you run your hand over his nipple, it hardens.
That's HOTT. I think I need to be by myself.
PS. Did I really just write that? Sing it with me now: "OH GOD."
PPS. Gabriel, I tried like hell to get you a guitar pick, but this bitch next to me grabbed it right out of my hand. She was kinda fat, too. Maybe it was FATURNINE.
Posted by: Dierdre | Jul 13, 2005 4:53:25 PM
d, did that really happen? i can't distinguish between truth and fantasy here. tell me it did. no, seriously, TELL ME IT DID.
so, not only are you able to spend a summer month in london, but ... and ... bwah ... hmph ... bitch!
in. cred. i. ble.
i, too, have been against the rail during 'piggy' (once during fragility and then again in march of this year), and have touched his head like everyone else. but you ... mkl ... slei ... opie ... bitch!
so happy for you.
i'm blushing. time to go.
you're dripping with fabulousness, dierdre.
love,
denise
p.s. faturnine is anything but 'kinda fat.' if security let a woman of that size into the pit, there would be many fire code standards violated.

*turns Trent's favorite color with jealousy*
OH GOD, indeed.
Tickets for the Detroit show go on sale this weekend. The most I can hope for is to be in the building with a full view of the stage. (I'm just too broke at the moment to join The Spiral and do the presale thing, but I'm not anti-fanclub.) But you... you... wow. This is shaping up to be quite the orgasmic summer for you, D.
On-topic: you'd asked what one thing that most convinces me of Trent's honesty. I'll let the man himself answer for me, paraphrasing of course. In a recent on-line video interview, he said that in the beginning (y'know, back in the day) he attempted to write politically-charged angry-at-the-world songs in the vein of the Clash. Then he found that writing about what was going on inside his head was much more fulfilling. It's also what endears him to me.
*thinks about where your hand went... grumble... shakes fist*
Posted by: emerald527 | Jul 13, 2005 8:15:43 PM
Dierdre, please tell me you're not just playing around... that way I can be justified in my sputtering about how unfair it is that you got to do such a thing.
I bet you're never going to wash that hand.
